Sam's Seventh Pokemon / Video Game-Themed Birthday Party

Covid is still a threat and I wasn’t sure whether to even make a party for Sam, but I’m glad that I did! We had a video game trailer park in front of the house, the boys played inside masked for an hour, hit a pinata, sang happy birthday, ate cupcakes and then ran around to work off the sugar. We had lots of level up / video gaming birthday decor. Sam is really into Pokémon, so I incorporated a Pikachu Pinata and Pokeball custom cookies from Mini Melanie.

Video game-themed party decorations

I typically put my efforts into one focal point — a combined dessert and goody bag table.

Here are details of what I did, and below are shoppable images.

I used a banner/backdrop stand to secure the gamer banner using special clips. I used the stand as the frame for the balloon garland. This was an outdoor December party, so I secured the stand with sandbags and also used a spandex tablecloth, which would stay in place better than a plastic one.

I displayed the mini cupcakes on a 4 tier lucite stand and topped the cupcakes with gamer-themed picks.

I used a lucite napkin holder (mine is simple but one with an incorporated weight would be better).

I displayed mini fruit cups on a lucite stand that I use for every birthday.

I displayed the Mini Melanie cookies in a spare lucite shelf (I hung these in my playroom and daughter’s room to display books — join my Facebook decor group for more great finds).

I wrote happy birthday using a cinema lightbox that I’ve used many times.

We hung a Pokemon pinata from the basketball hoop. This pinata is almost too good quality — the kids had a hard time breaking it open.

Video game-themed Goody Bags

We sent each kid home with a small goody bag, as well as a custom cookie by Mini Melanie. We’ve served something by Mini Melanie at most every event over the past 6+ years. Her cookies are the best I’ve had!!

Here’s what we included in the goody bags (shoppable images below):

  • Game Over bag

  • Personalized gamer tags and stickers by Mabel’s Labels. We use these tags for school, sports and camp and they really keep us from losing things! Click here and use code BEST10 for 10% off your Mabel’s Labels order (excludes stamps).

  • Mini flashlight labeled with a Mabel’s Labels sticker

  • Stickbot keychain (I got these at a discount store for $3 each but can’t find that price online). I will link some other options below.

  • Ringpop
